Dear Greene County Schools Community,
We know that recent federal immigration actions may be unsettling for some members of our community, and we have seen this reflected in the significant increase in student absences this week. Moments like these can bring uncertainty, questions, and worry. As your school district, we want to reassure you of the commitments that guide our work every single day.
First and foremost, every student who walks through our doors deserves a safe, welcoming, and supportive place to learn. That promise does not change, regardless of immigration status, background, or circumstance. Our mission is rooted in creating environments where students feel valued, protected, and able to thrive, and that remains unchanged.
We also want to provide clarity about our responsibilities as a public school system. Federal law, including the Supreme Court’s decision in Plyler v. Doe, guarantees all children the right to a public education. In accordance with that law, our schools enroll and serve students without asking about or tracking immigration status. We will continue to uphold all privacy laws governing student information and remain vigilant in protecting the rights of every child we serve.
Our school leaders have also been reminded of the protocols to follow if law enforcement requests access to students or the school grounds. Any such request will be handled in consultation with our legal team to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and the protection of our students.
If your student is feeling anxious or needs additional support, please reach out to your school’s student services team. Our counselors and social workers are here to help. Our staff is committed to supporting students' emotional well-being during uncertain times.
Thank you for your continued trust, partnership, and care for one another. Our schools are stronger because of the compassion and resilience of this community. We will continue to stand alongside every student, every family, and every staff member, today and always.
With appreciation,
Rodney McNeill, Ed.D. and Joey Rackley
Superintendent and School Board Chairman
