Greene County Schools Designated a Low-Performing District: Improvement Plan and Opportunities for Public Input

The North Carolina State Board of Education has designated Greene County Schools as a low-performing district. A low-performing district is one in which the majority of its schools have been identified as low-performing. Based on 2025–2026 results, these four schools have been designated as low-performing:

  • West Greene Elementary: Grade F, growth Not Met
  • Greene County Intermediate: Grade D, growth Not Met
  • Greene County Middle School: Grade F, growth Not Met
  • Greene Central High School: Grade D, growth Not Met

In addition, Snow Hill Primary, West Greene Elementary, Greene County Intermediate, and Greene Central High School have been designated as Targeted Support and Improvement – Additional Targeted Support (TSI-AT) schools. These are schools where a student subgroup is underperforming.

We also celebrate Greene Early College High School, which earned a School Performance Grade of “B” and exceeded expected growth.

Just as no single score tells the whole story of a student, no single grade reveals everything about a school or the opportunities it provides. We are committed to improvement, and our 2026–2027 District Improvement Plan sets four goals to reach by June 2027:

  1. Increase Mathematics and Reading/ELA Proficiency in Grades 3–8, with an intensive focus on Grade 8 math and Grade 4 reading
  2. Increase Science Proficiency in Grade 5, Grade 8, and Biology
  3. Close Achievement Gaps for Students with Disabilities and English Learners
  4. Reduce the Number of Low-Performing Schools from four to two or fewer, and move the district toward removal from Low-Performing District status

We will not wait for end-of-year test results to see whether the plan is working. Throughout the year, schools and the district will monitor progress using i-Ready diagnostics, mid-year assessments, NC Check-Ins, common assessments, and DIBELS (Grades K–5). Progress will be reported to the Board of Education every quarter.

Review the Plan: October 28, 2026

The preliminary improvement plan will be presented to the Board of Education on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. It will be posted on the GCS website on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Share Your Feedback: October 28 – November 12, 2026

We welcome input from parents, families, staff, and community members. Feedback will be accepted from October 28 through November 12, 2026.

Virtual Q&A Sessions: Thursday, November 5, 2026

District leaders will walk through the plan and answer your questions on Zoom. Please join whichever time works best for you:

  • 10:00 a.m.: [Zoom link will be posted here after the board meeting]
  • 7:00 p.m.: [Zoom link will be posted here after the board meeting]

Thank you for your partnership. When families, schools, and the community work together, we can make sure every student is on track for success. If you have questions about your child’s school, please contact your school principal.

Canvas Cybersecurity Incident

Greene County Schools Families,

We want to make you aware of the recent cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, the learning management system used by many schools in North Carolina.

On Thursday evening, May 7, 2026, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) temporarily disabled Canvas access through NCEdCloud statewide after unauthorized messages appeared on the platform. This action was taken out of an abundance of caution to help protect student and staff information while the incident was investigated.

NCDPI has since received an interim assessment from CrowdStrike, the third-party cybersecurity firm assisting with the investigation. According to Instructure, there are currently no ongoing signs of compromise within the Canvas environment in North Carolina or nationwide. At this time, there is also no evidence that passwords or sensitive information, such as social security numbers, were compromised.

As a result, NCDPI restored statewide access to Canvas on Monday, May 11.

Families and students are still encouraged to remain cautious of phishing attempts or suspicious messages and to report anything unusual to their school.

For additional information and updates regarding the incident, families may visit Instructure’s incident status page.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support as we work to protect student and staff information while maintaining uninterrupted teaching and learning.
